Nungwi Beach: The Ultimate Guide

Located on the northern tip of Zanzibar Island, Nungwi Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Tanzania. Its long stretch of white sand and turquoise waters make it a perfect spot for swimming and enjoying the stunning views. Nungwi Beach is home to everything you can find for a perfect beach vacation.

Nungwi Beach is located on the northern tip of Zanzibar Island, an island about 25 miles off the coast of Tanzania. Commuting to this beach is fairly simple. You can either take a taxi or safari bus from Stone Town (the capital of Zanzibar), take a ferry from Dar es Salaam. The ferry ride from Dar es Salaam takes about 2 hours, while the taxi or bus ride takes about 3-4 hours. Once you arrive in Stone Town, there are plenty of taxis and safari buses that commute to Nungwi Beach.

If you’re coming from Dar es Salaam, we recommend taking the ferry. The ferry ride is much shorter, and is great to see some of the gorgeous coastline. To make it even better, it’s very affordable! Tickets are about $15 USD per person. Do buy your tickets in advance, as they do sell out!

Whether you want to relax on the beach all day or try something new, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of our favorite activities:

-Windsurfing: If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping activity, head to Red Monkey Windsports. You can rent windsurfing equipment, or take lessons from them.
-Diving: For those who want to explore underwater, there are several diving sites nearby. It’s an amazing experience, as you can see coral reefs and tropical fish surrounding you. Diving lessons are offered if this is your first time.
-Spa day: After a day spent swimming and exploring, treat yourself to a massage, or other spa treatment, at one of the resorts near Nungwi Beach.
-Sunset cruise: Experiencing Nungwi Beach on a boat is one of the best experiences this island has to offer. There are several companies that offer sunset cruises, where you can enjoy stunning views of the sunset while sipping on champagne.

Nungwi Beach offers a variety of delicious dishes. Whether you want fresh seafood, or local Tanzanian cuisine, there’s something for everyone’s taste buds. When it comes time to quench your thirst, there are plenty of bars where you can enjoy tropical cocktails while watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Some of our favorite places to eat and drink at Nungwi Beach include:

-The Rock Restaurant: Located right on the beach, this restaurant offers fresh seafood dishes with beautiful ocean views.

-Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond Café: This café not only has great food but it’s also dedicated to conserving marine turtles. A portion of all proceeds goes towards turtle conservation efforts.

-Dhow Bar & Lounge: If you’re looking for a place to enjoy cocktails while watching the sunset, this bar is perfect. They also have live music most nights so you can dance the night away under the stars.
